Questions We Get a Lot
Most home float tanks require between 800 and 1,200 lbs of Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) to achieve the high-density solution needed for effortless floating. This amount is typically enough for the life of the tank — you only add salt when water evaporates over time. The dense saltwater solution also acts as a natural sanitizer, keeping the water cleaner between sessions than a standard tub.
Float tank water is maintained through a combination of high salinity (which inhibits microbial growth), UV filtration, and hydrogen peroxide or ozone systems that run between sessions. Most home float tanks are designed to filter the entire water volume at least three times between uses. You'll also want to test pH and sanitizer levels periodically and replace water every one to three years depending on usage frequency.
Consistent floatation therapy has been associated with significant reductions in cortisol and anxiety, accelerated muscle recovery from training, improved sleep quality, and enhanced mental clarity. The gravity-free environment removes the constant physical load on joints and muscles, while the sensory-reduced setting allows the nervous system to shift deeply into a restorative state. Many users report effects comparable to several hours of deep sleep after a single 60–90 minute session.
Home float tanks vary in footprint, but most require a dedicated room or large bathroom with at least 8 ft × 6 ft of clear floor space, plus enough ceiling height to accommodate the pod lid opening (typically 7–8 ft). You'll also need access to a standard 120V electrical outlet and a nearby drain or the ability to pump water out for maintenance. Proper ventilation is important to manage humidity in the space around the tank.
About Our Float Tanks
At Health Fitness Hacks, our float tank collection brings professional-grade sensory deprivation therapy into your home. Floatation REST (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy) has a decades-long research record supporting its effects on stress reduction, athletic recovery, and mental clarity. The zero-gravity, low-stimulus environment of a float tank allows the nervous system to down-regulate in a way few other modalities can match. Our lineup is curated for home installation — with attention to build quality, water maintenance systems, and the practical realities of setting up a float tank outside a commercial spa. Pair your float tank with our infrared saunas, PEMF mats, or cold plunge systems for a complete home recovery ecosystem designed around how you want to feel every day.
